PONTE VERDE, Fla. — The LSU men’s golf team finished the first day of play at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship with a two-round total of 25-over par 601, good for a tie for eighth place with Tennessee in Ponte Verde, Fla.
LSU was led by Alan Morgan and transfer Craig Taylor who shot rounds of 144 (even par) and 147 (3-over), respectively. Redshirt freshman John Humphries, senior Jeremy Wilkinson and Michael Vallillo also competed for the Tigers.
Morgan is in seventh place overall while Taylor stands in 17th.
The University of Florida recorded rounds of 280 and 294 for a two-round total of 574 to take over first place after the first day of competition. Camilo Benedetti of Florida carded a 67-71-138 (6-under) for the individual lead.
The tournament is being played through Tuesday at Sawgrass Country Club, a par 72, 6,895-yard course in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
The tournament host, North Florida, is in second at 577 at 1-over, after rounds of 279-298, followed by North Carolina State (287-298-585), Northwestern (287-304-585), and Augusta State (290-306-596). Rounding out the top 10 were Mississippi State (298-302-600) and College of Charleston (297-303-600) tying for sixth, Tennessee (289-312-601) and LSU (297-304-601) tying for eighth and South Carolina in 10th at 295-308-603.
