Gymnastics Sets Season High in Victory

BATON ROUGE — The sixth-ranked LSU gymnastics team posted season high marks in three events as it shattered its overall season-high score in beating Centenary 196.800-189.100.

The win improved LSU to 9-2 on the season.

“We accomplished exactly what we needed to,” said LSU coach D-D Breaux. “The message we had for the kids before the meet was that you have to get up and compete like you are one of the top six teams in the country.”

In setting the new season-high, LSU recorded a 49.00 or better in each of the four events for the first time all year. It was the first time the Tigers accomplished that feat since in 1997 when LSU set a school record with a 197.150 score against Illinois-Chicago.

“The level of competition tonight was much improved. We have been working our line up to get our best people ready and we were very close to having our best lineup,” said Breaux.

LSU began the meet by scoring its first 49.00 on vault since the 1998 season. Stephanie Hyett led the way for the Tigers with a season-high 9.85 as she won the event.

On the uneven bars, LSU fell just a quarter-point of tying the season best mark. Season-high scores by Marina Degteva, 9.925, and Stephanie Hyett 9.90 paced the Tigers. Abbey Burns also added a 9.90.

In the third rotation, Burns and Stacey Wegner each charted season-high 9.90’s to help LSU record a 49.325, its best mark of the year.

Finishing up on the floor, the Tigers tied the season high mark with a 49.30. Shanyn McEachern sparked LSU with a 9.90.

The Tigers will be on the road next Friday at Florida. Auburn comes to town on Friday, March 3 for the next LSU home meet.
