BATON ROUGE, La. — Former LSU hurlers Brett Laxton and Barry Manuel are scheduled to pitch in Thursday’s baseball alumni game at 7 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium.
The alumni game will feature the 2000 LSU squad versus a team of former Tiger players who are active in professional baseball. The game is designed to help LSU prepare for its regular season opener Feb. 12 versus Virginia in Alex Box Stadium.
Laxton, who pitches for the Oakland Athletics, fired a 16-strikeout, three-hit shutout in LSU?s 1993 College World Series championship game win over Wichita State. He was named the 1993 National Freshman of the Year after posting a 12-1 record and a 1.98 ERA. Manuel, who has pitched for five different major league clubs, was the relief ace of LSU?s 1986 and 1987 CWS teams. His major league resume? includes stints with the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Montreal Expos, New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Tickets for the alumni game are on sale at the LSU athletic ticket office. Tickets are $5, and all seating is general admission. The LSU ticket office, located on the first floor of the LSU athletic administration building, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Payments may be made by cash, check, VISA or MasterCard.
Among the other alumni scheduled to participate are infielder Russ Johnson of the Houston Astros; pitcher Rick Greene of the Cincinnati Reds; first baseman Eddy Furniss, the 1998 college baseball National Player of the Year, who is now playing in the Pittsburgh Pirates? organization; and infielder Brandon Larson, the 1997 College World Series Most Outstanding Player, who is now in the Reds? organization.
The alumni roster also includes pitchers Doug Thompson, Dan Guillory, Patrick Coogan, Kevin Shipp, Chris Demouy and Scott Schultz, first baseman Jeff Leaumont, infielders Trey McClure and Brad Wilson, catcher Clint Earnhart and outfielders Mike Koerner, Justin Bowles and Tom Bernhardt.
