BATON ROUGE- Following its dramatic victory over No. 1 Alabama last Friday, the LSU gymnastics team moved up one spot to No. 6 in the new national rankings released on Wednesday.
The No. 6 ranking matches the highest the Tigers have been ranked this season. For the second consecutive week the Tigers and Nebraska flip-flopped positions with Nebraska falling to seventh in the latest poll. The national rankings are based on season averages and the Tigers’ season-high 196.325 against Alabama was enough to catapult them back to the No. 6 spot.
Despite falling to the Tigers at the Maravich Assembly Center on Friday, Alabama held its No. 1 ranking based on season average. Georgia and Michigan switched positions with the Gym Dogs taking the second spot. Utah remained fourth, followed by UCLA in fifth to round out the top five.
The Tigers are ranked in the top 10 in three of the four disciplines and just on the outside in the other. The Tigers rank sixth in the nation on the uneven bars, seventh in the floor exercise, eighth in the vault and 11th on the balance beam.
Individually, Shanyn MacEachern, who was selected Tuesday as the SEC Gymnast of the Week for the second consecutive week, ranks in the top 20 in the nation in the all-around, floor and beam. MacEachern’s all-around average of 39.2875 ranks eighth in the nation, while she currently sits seventh in the nation in the floor exercise and 16th on the beam.
Teammate Stacey Wegener is tied for the 10th spot in the nation on the beam, while Beth Boudreaux is tied for 25th in the nation on the floor.
LSU returns to action this weekend in a four-way meet in Denton, Texas with Texas Woman’s University, Oklahoma and Illinois-Chicago.
