DALLAS — LSU’s Tom Hand and Michal Chmela were both winners in their first-round matches of the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships held Thursday morning at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, Texas.
Hand defeated SMU’s Dustin Mauck, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, while Chmela downed Virginia Commonwealth’s Jose Sanchez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Hand, ranked 13th in the nation, will take on the Notre Dame’s Ryan Sachire, who defeated Arkansas’ Oskar Johansson, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (4), in Friday’s second round of the singles draw.
Fifteenth-ranked Chmela will take on the winner of second-seeded Jeff Morrison of Florida and Brad Erickson of Northwestern.
Chmela and Hand, the fourth-seeded doubles team in the tournament, defeated Boise State’s Leif Mieneke and Wesley Moodie 6-3, 7-5, in the first round of the doubles draw.
The Rolex Indoor Championship is the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam and will continue through Sunday.
