Brew, Spencer Named Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE- LSU All-American Derrick Brew has been named Co-SEC Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week, while fellow LSU All-American Keisha Spencer earned Co-SEC Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Brew broke the nine-year-old LSU 400-meter record with his blazing time of 46.54 at Iowa State this past weekend. He shares the honor with shot putter Reese Hoffa of Georgia who came up with a throw of 63-10 + at Nebraska this weekend to automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Brew is the first Tiger to win the honor this season.

Spencer, who a day earlier was named Trackwire National Women’s Athlete of the Week, claims the SEC honor for the second time this season, as her 46-foot effort in the triple jump at Nebraska on Saturday was the fourth-best jump in NCAA history. Spencer earned the first award of the season on Jan. 19 after opening the season with a 45-10 jump at the LSU Invitational.

It marks the second consecutive week a Lady Tiger Tiger has claimed the SEC honor, as Peta-Gaye Dowdie won the award last week.

Spencer shares the weekly honor with Amy Yoder of Arkansas, who blew away the Lady ‘Back school record in the 5,000 meter run with a national-leading time of 16:15.24, 24 seconds faster than the second best time in the nation.
