BATON ROUGE- The LSU women’s track and field team held on to the No. 1 ranking in the Trackwire Top 25, while the Tigers dipped two spots to ninth in the poll released on Tuesday.
In addition, LSU’s Keisha Spencer earned her second Trackwire National Women’s Athlete of the Week honor of the season following her 46-foot effort in the triple jump at Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, the fourth best jump in NCAA history. Spencer also earned the honor in January after opening the season with a 45-10 effort in the Lady Tigers’ season-opener in Baton Rouge.
The Lady Tigers’ lead in the national rankings fell for the second consecutive week, as they received 52 points in this week’s poll. No. 2 Texas climbed to within two points of LSU, while South Carolina is just four points back in the third spot. UCLA and Arkansas remain fourth and fifth.
In the men’s poll, Arkansas continues to hold the top spot in the nation, although No. 2 Stanford closed to within two points of the Razorbacks after breaking the American Collegiate record in the men’s distance medley relay at Arkansas on Saturday. Florida continues to hold the third spot, followed by Clemson and Auburn.
The Tigers fell two spots to No. 9, yet kept the same point total of a week ago with 20. Texas took sole possession of the No. 7 spot after being tied with the Tigers a week ago, while TCU moved up to the No. 8 spot after a strong showing from its sprinters in Fayetteville this weekend.
Both the LSU men’s and women’s teams return to action on Friday at the LSU Twilight at the Carl Maddox Field House. Field events get underway at 3 p.m., while track events begin at 6 p.m.
