Track Strengthens No. 1 Lead

BATON ROUGE- The LSU women’s track and field team continues to increase its strangle-hold on the top ranking in the nation, as the Lady Tigers widened their national lead from eight points

last week to 23 this week in the new Trackwire national rankings released on Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers received 73 points in this weeks poll, identical to their total of a week ago. The biggest factor in the increase in their lead came as a result of the decline of several top teams. Previous No. 2 Texas went from 65 points in the poll last week to 40 this week, while previous No. 3 UCLA lost 20 points off their total of 59 a week ago. Each fell one place in the rankings.

At the same time South Carolina gained 15 points and moved from fourth to second with 50 points. Arkansas continues to hold the fifth spot in the national rankings, rounding out the top five.

In the men’s poll, the Tigers continue to hold the 11th spot. Arkansas continues to lead the men’s poll followed by Stanford, Florida, and Clemson and Alabama tied for the fourth spot.

The Tigers will get a major test on Sunday at the Gator Invitational. On hand will be third-ranked Florida, fourth-ranked Clemson, sixth-ranked Auburn and ninth-ranked Arizona State.

Top 10 teams in the women’s field on Sunday include sixth-ranked Auburn and tenth-ranked Florida.
