LSU Plays Host to LSU Indoor Invitational

Meet Schedule Below

BATON ROUGE- The No. 1-ranked Lady Tiger track and field team and the 11th-ranked Tigers continue the early stages of the 2000 season on Saturday, welcoming in 20 teams to the LSU Invitational at the the Carl Maddox Field House. Field events get underway at 1 p.m., while track events get underway at 3:45 p.m.

After starting the season conservatively, LSU head coach Pat Henry has indicated that he will use more of his top athletes this weekend in an effort to prepare them for their first major test of the season, the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., on Feb. 6.

“We’ve trained very hard this week and we’re trying to prepare to get on Florida’s track next week,” said Henry. “There’s a good field coming in this weekend and this will be a solid competition that will get us going before we begin to prepare for the major competitions over the next several weeks.”

Joining LSU this weekend will be solid programs such as South Alabama, ranked tenth in the men’s national poll, Ole Miss, ranked No. 18 in the men’s national poll, and UTEP, ranked 23rd in the women’s poll. In addition, a bulk of the Louisiana schools will be on hand.

1999 NCAA indoor 200-meter champion Peta-Gaye Dowdie of LSU will make her season debut on Saturday, heading the list of competitors in the 60-meter dash.

Seven-time All-American Myra Combs will open her 2000 season at the LSU Invitational, competing in both the long jump and 200-meter dash.

On the men’s side, 1999 NCAA 400-meter runner-up Derrick Brew will highlight the 200-meter field in preparation to run his first quarter of the season in Gainesville next week.

While many of the track athletes are targeting LSU’s trip to Florida as a breakthrough weekend, both the Tiger and Lady Tiger field event competitors will look for a big weekend at the Field House.

NCAA triple jump leader Keisha Spencer and third-ranked Bianca Rockett will turn their attention to the long jump on Saturday along with Combs and 1999 SEC Indoor and Outdoor long jump champion Monique Freeman.

On the men’s side, All-American pole vaulter Russ Buller will return to action in hopes of breaking the one LSU record he does not own, the Carl Maddox Field House record of 18 feet 1 + inches. Buller nearly broke the record at the Tigers’ opener on Jan. 15 but just missed a clearance at 18 4 + after clearing 18-0 +.
