BATON ROUGE- Keisha Spencer of the No.1-ranked LSU women’s track and field team has been selected by Trackwire as its Female Athlete of the Week after taking the national lead in the triple jump at the season-opening LSU Purple Tiger Saturday.
Spencer, a three-time All-American and third place finisher in the triple jump at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships, opened her season with a personal best 45 foot 10 inch effort on Saturday. The mark was the fifth best in NCAA history and the second-furthest jump at the Carl Maddox Field House.
Spencer was picked by Trackwire last week as its favorite to win the NCAA triple jump crown.
The 1999 SEC Indoor Commissioner’s Trophy winner becomes the first Lady Tiger to win the weekly award since Astia Walker was selected during the 1998 indoor season.
Despite moving into the top five all-time in NCAA history with her effort, Spencer still ranks second on the LSU all-time list. Former Lady Tiger Suzette Lee owns the NCAA record in the event with her effort of 46-9 in winning the 1997 NCAA Indoor title.
