LSU Women’s Tennis Defeats SLU, West Florida

BATON ROUGE – – The 22nd ranked LSU women’s tennis team improved its 2000 season record to 4-0 Sunday by defeating both West Florida and Southeastern Louisiana.

“The team did an incredible job out there today,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “They played great tennis, and they limited their mistakes. It always feels good to get the season off to an undefeated start.”

The Lady Tigers played the West Florida Argonauts in their opening match Sunday morning and came away with an 8-1 victory. LSU’s nationally ranked singles players: sophomore Bruna Colosio and senior Ana Paula Mores won their first matches of the spring season.

20th ranked Colosio beat West Florida’s Andrea Petrisov by the score of 6-2, 6-3, while the 37th ranked Mores outplayed Tania Kovatchka, 6-3, 6-2. The team of Colosio/Mores was also victorious on the day in doubles. The 20th ranked duo defeated Kovatchka/Scalibrino of West Florida, 8-5.

“Both Bruna and Ana are playing really good tennis right now,” Minnis said. “Hopefully, the two of them will be able to continue to win big matches for us throughout the season.”

In LSU’s second match of the day, the Lady Tigers topped the Southeastern Lions, 6-0. Fernanda Tsucamoto won her second match of the doubleheader for LSU with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over the Lions’ Jessica Lewis.

Freshman Lauren Haddix and sophomore transfer Amy McIlhaney, both went undefeated for the Lady Tigers on Sunday. Haddix finished with wins over West Florida’s Celeste Gracey (6-1, 6-0) and Southeastern’s Bronwyn Swanepool (6-0, 6-1), while McIlhaney defeated Julie Kraft of West Florida (6-0, 6-1) and Nikki McGhughey of Southeastern (6-0, 6-1).

LSU junior tennis player Mandy Rice was also victorious Sunday as she dominated the Lions’ Klementyna Zuruski without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0.
