Women’s Tennis Finishes N.M. Sweep

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – – The 22nd ranked LSU women’s tennis team soundly defeated each of their three opponents this weekend in the New Mexico Invitational Tournament. The Lady Tigers ended the three-day competition with 38 victories and only 7 losses in both their singles and doubles matches.

LSU culminated the competition late Sunday evening with a resounding 14-2 victory over the hometeam, 27th ranked New Mexico Lobos. Both teams came in Monday with 2-0 records in the tournament after they each previously defeated No. 44 Colorado and New Mexico State.

“We are playing some awesome tennis right now,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “I am glad that we will be starting the regular season on a roll, and I just hope that the momentum that the girls gained here will carry over to the season.”

LSU swept all eight singles matches against the Lobos and were led by sophomore, 20th ranked Bruna Colosio, who remained undefeated on the weekend as she handily won over No. 44 Ana Friganovic, 6-2, 6-0 on court No. 1.

The Lady Tiger’s senior captain, No. 37 Ana Paula Mores, also faced a ranked opponent in Monday’s match. She lost the second set to 100th ranked Natalia Alckhova, but won both the first and third sets without giving up a game. The final score of the match was 6-0, 4-6, (10-0).

“Both Ana and Bruna are playing dominating smart tennis,” said Minnis. “They played some tough opponents this weekend and showed enough talent and determination to come away without any losses.”

In doubles competition, the 20th ranked duo of Colosio/Mores won two of the six Lady Tiger victories against both Friganovic/Pollock (8-2), and Hedberg/Friganovic (8-4) of New Mexico. The other winning teams for LSU were Craycraft/Haddix who also won twice, Botts/Fedas, and Tsucamoto/McIlhaney.

The LSU Lady Tigers will next be in action Jan. 29, as it open its 2000 regular season against Centenary at “Dub” Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge. The singles matches will begin at noon.
