Hibbert, Brown Named SEC Players of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Katrina Hibbert and April Brown were named the Southeastern Conference Co-Players of the Week on Monday after helping the Lady Tigers to an 80-74 win over second-ranked Georgia last Thursday, league officials announced.

The SEC Co-Player of the Week honor for Brown and Hibbert marks the first time since 1992 that the league has had two players share the award. The honor is the first of Brown’s career, while Hibbert has won the award three times.

“This is a nice honor for both players,” LSU coach Sue Gunter said. “They both had outstanding games last week against Georgia and they are very deserving of this honor. We knew coming into the year that April and Katrina would be our two leaders on the floor and they have certainly done an outstanding job leading this team over the first few weeks of the season.”

Last week, Brown, a native of Gulfport, Miss., averaged 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the Lady Tigers’ two victories over Georgia and UL-Lafayette. Brown scored a career-best 25 points, including 16 in the first half, to go along with eight rebounds and three blocked shots against Georgia. Brown opened the week with 12 points, six rebounds and a career-best five steals against UL-Lafayette.

Hibbert, from Melbourne, Australia, averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 4.0 steals for the week. Hibbert had 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals in 40 minutes of action against Georgia. Hibbert scored a season-high 22 points, including 19 in the first half, to go with eight assists against UL-Lafayette. Hibbert also connected on 4-of-6 3-pointers against the Lady Cajuns and she followed that by hitting 3-of-5 against Georgia.

After the victory over Georgia, LSU moved from 23rd to 15th in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.

LSU returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they play host to undefeated Michigan at the Maravich Assembly Center in a game televised live by ESPN2.
