BATON ROUGE – – The LSU women’s tennis team will open the 2000 season as the 22nd ranked team in the nation, the team’s highest ranking since the 1997 season.
“I am extremely pleased that we are starting the season at 22,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “The girls earned the ranking by both finishing well last season and by the way that they performed in the fall. Right now we just have to start working hard to sustain our position.”
Despite the high national ranking, the Lady Tigers are behind seven Southeastern Conference schools. The nation’s toughest conference placed eight schools in the top 30 and all 12 in the top 70.
“The SEC is always one of the top conferences in the nation and this season is no exception. Every team is very capable, so you never get a day off and have to play hard every time you step on the court or you will come away with a loss. But if you can be successful in the SEC, you will be successful nationally as well,” said Minnis.
Sophomore Bruna Colosio continued to move up in the individual rankings as she is now 20th, up 10 spots from the fall preseason rankings. Senior Ana Paula Mores jumped over 40 spots in the rankings as she is now in 37th position.
The duo of Colosio and Mores ranked in at No. 20 in the doubles rankings, five spots below their preseason spot of 15th.
