BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU faces one of its most challenging baseball schedules in several years, as the 2000 Tigers will play nine teams ranked in Collegiate Baseball magazine’s pre-season Top 40. The Tigers, who begin practice on Jan. 24, enter the 2000 campaign ranked No. 8 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
The 56-game regular season schedule begins on Saturday, Feb. 12, when LSU faces Virginia at 2 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium in the first game of a twin bill. The second game will start at 7 p.m., and the teams will conclude the series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, Feb. 13.
The 33-game home slate features three-game series versus several ranked opponents, including No. 28 Arizona State (Feb. 18-20), No. 10 Houston (Feb. 25-27), No. 34 South Carolina (March 24-26), No. 32 Arkansas (April 7-9) and No. 3 Alabama (May 12-14). The Tigers will play No. 13 Tulane on March 1 in Alex Box Stadium, and the teams will meet again on April 19 at Zephyr Field in Metairie.
LSU will also face three ranked opponents in three-game road series, as the Tigers will play at No. 17 Auburn (March 31-April 2), at No. 24 Florida (April 14-16) and at No. 40 Ole Miss (April 28-30).
Along with the ranked opponents, LSU will play host to SEC foes Georgia and Mississippi State, and the Tigers will entertain in-state rivals Southeastern Louisiana, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Southern, New Orleans, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Northwestern State.
The Tigers will also welcome Meiji University of Japan to Alex Box Stadium on March 8 for an exhibition contest.
The Tigers non-conference road schedule features games versus Centenary at Fairgrounds Field in Shreveport (March 28), versus New Orleans at Zephyr Field in Metairie (April 4), at McNeese State in Lake Charles (May 2) and at Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond (March 14). The LSU-SLU game had been tentatively scheduled for Zephyr Field; however, the schools have agreed to play at SLU s Alumni Field.
