NEW ORLEANS – – LSU women’s tennis player Ana Paula Mores defeated Julie DeRoo of Ole Miss Sunday to capture the singles title in the Tulane Green Wave Classic. After winning each of her previous matches of the weekend in three sets, Mores topped DeRoo 7-6, 7-6 in the final by stepping up her play in the two tiebreaker sets.
“In a tight situation like playing tiebreakers,” said Mores, “I prefer to keep going forward, come into the net and put more pressure on my opponents to make the shots. Today, I think we both played better during the tiebreakers.”
In the “D” singles bracket of the tournament, Lady Tiger freshman Lauren Haddix breezed her way into the title match by beating Amanda Cowieson of ULL, 6-2, 6-1, and Southern Mississippi’s Molly Boutries 6-1, 6-2. On Sunday, Haddix earned the “D” singles title in straight sets over Lindsey Merwin of the hometown favorite Green Wave 6-2, 6-4.
The LSU women’s tennis players are next in action November 4 in College Station, Texas, where it will be participating in the ITA Regional Tournament. The competition will start Thursday and conclude Sunday afternoon.
