BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU baseball program received national Letters-of-intent Wednesday from four high school recruits, including two from Louisiana and two from Florida. Joining the LSU program are pitcher Lane Mestepey of Central Private High School in Baton Rouge; first baseman Trent Hebert of Brother Martin High in New Orleans; catcher Omar Falcon of Southridge High in Miami; and outfielder Brendan Winn of Merritt Island (Fla.) High.
Mestepey, a 6-1, 180-pound left-hander, enjoyed an excellent junior season at Central Private, recording an 8-2 mark and a 2.32 ERA in 57.1 innings. He allowed 45 hits and 19 earned runs with 20 walks and 54 strikeouts. Mestepey was also recruited by Tulane and Ole Miss.
Hebert, a 6-2, 215-pound, all-district performer, hit .494 last season with seven home runs. He also collected 15 doubles and three triples as the Crusaders’ top hitter.
Falcon, a 6-0, 185-pound all-Miami Area selection, hit .360 in 1999 with seven homers and 60 RBI, as he led Southridge to the district title.
Winn, a 6-1, 193-pound centerfielder, earned 1999 all-state honors as he hit .370 (37-for-100) with nine doubles, one triple, 11 homers and 27 RBI. Winn, who was also recruited by Florida, Florida State and Mississippi State, stole 21 bases and scored 34 runs.
The signees are scheduled to enroll at LSU in the fall of 2000. The Tigers expect to add several more players during the fall signing period, which ends November 17.
