ATHENS, Ga. — LSU men’s tennis player Jesse Smatt defeated Duke’s Yorke Allen 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the second round of the Southern Collegiate Championship Friday afternoon. He now moves on to the quarterfinals where he will face Jacob Nordwall from the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
“Jesse has been playing great tennis,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “He’s a strong competitor, he plays every match to win, and it’s not a surprise that he’s doing well in this tournament.” Smatt’s opponent in the quarterfinals, Nordwell, got there by defeating Florida State’s Mike Ingham 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round and Karl Henrik Brevold from Stetson 6-4 7-6 (5) in the opening round.
“This tournament is full of some talented players from great tennis programs, so hopefully this experience against tough competition will better prepare us for the season,” said Brown.
Smatt, the talented Tiger sophomore, will compete in the quarterfinals of the Southern Collegiate Championships Saturday afternoon in Athens, Georgia.
