Smatt Advances to Final of La.-Lafayette Tourny

LAFAYETTE, La. Sophomore Jesse Smatt was one of many LSU Tiger tennis player who had good showings Saturday in the BellSouth Mobility Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

We have had a couple of guys play well this weekend, said LSU coach Jeff Brown. I think we accomplished what we wanted by coming to ULL and having everyone win a match.

Smatt won twice on Saturday after winning two times on Friday to advance to the final of the B flight singles. The top-seed, Smatt beat Shannon Nettle in three sets in the morning to advance to the afternoon semifinal.

In that match, he handled fourth-seeded Ramez Qamar of Arkansas 6-4, 7-6 (2). He will face Rice’s Cody Jackson in the final on Sunday morning.

Jesse has done a good job this weekend, said Brown. Being the top seed has put some pressure on him and he has responded well and taken care of his business.

Lafayette native Ed Rubin pulled off an upset on Saturday morning as he beat Tulane’s Dennis Lundberg 6-4, 6-4. Lundberg is ranked 75th in the nation.

Ed came through with the biggest win of his career so far. It shows that he has continued to make progress from the end of last year until now.
