PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — In the 1999 Riviera Women’s All-American Championships the Lady Tiger duo of Bruna Colosio and Ana Paula Mores came up short in the quarterfinal round. The No. 15 ranked doubles team in the nation lost to Stanford’s Teryn Ashley and Laura Granville 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
“The girls gave 110 percent out there today,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “I’m really proud of the way that they performed and how they took one of the premier doubles teams in the nation down to the wire.”
Although the team of Ashley and Granville is not nationally ranked, Ashley is one half of the No. 1-ranked doubles duo in the nation along with Marissa Irvin. In singles play, Ashley is ranked sixth while Granville is ranked 19th nationally.
LSU’s Colosio/Mores advanced to the quarterfinal round by beating South Carolina’s Katerina Markovski and Jennifer Radman 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Ashley/Granville defeated the nations No. 2 team of Amanda Basica and Annica Cooper from UCLA to move on to the quarterfinals where they toppled the combination from LSU.
Stanford’s Ashley/Granville won their semifinal round match against Georgia’s Esther Knox and Aarthi Venkatesan late Saturday evening to advance to the final. In the championship match they faced the nation’s No. 1 ranked team of Zuzana Lesenarova and Katarina Valkyova from San Diego, losing 6-4, 6-1.
The Lady Tigers resume fall play Friday, Oct. 29, in the Tulane Invitational Tournament. The event will take place in New Orleans through Oct. 31.
