Soccer Loses to Tulane, 3-0

METAIRIE, La.- Behind a pair of early first half goals, Tulane beat the LSU women’s soccer team 3-0 Wednesday evening at Zephyr Field in Metairie.

Tulane (6-1) used two goals from Alycia Wanat and a goal and an assist from Colleen Lake to seal the Tigers’ (4-5) fate.

LSU dropped its second consecutive decision on the season and lost to Tulane for the third consecutive year in the process. The Tigers are now 0-5 this season in games in which they let the opponent score first.

“We made two early mistakes and Tulane was able to capitalize and we just couldn’t recover,” said LSU head coach Greg Boggs. “We played much better in the second half and created some opportunities, but did not play well enough to win.”

Wanat got the Green Wave on the board in the sixth minute of play when she rocketed a perfectly placed 20-yard shot past Tiger goalkeeper Bryna Warnock.

In the 18th minute Wanat made it a 2-0 contest, finishing a perfect combination play from Lake and Desiree Bordes.

The Tigers regrouped at the half and created several near-scoring chances in the second half but were unable to finish.

“I thought Julie Pitre played exceptionally well creating a number of good offensive chances and I thought Katie Thomas played extremely well tonight, but we just couldn’t put it all together as a team,” added Boggs.

Lake closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute, finishing off an odd-man rush to give Tulane a 3-0 lead.

The Green Wave outshot the Tigers 18-5 on the evening.

LSU now turns its attention back to the Southeastern Conference and a showdown with defending national champion Florida on Friday night in Gainesville. Friday night will be a match-up of division leaders, as the Tigers lead the SEC West heading into Friday’s contest, while Florida is part of a three-way tie with Georgia and Tennessee atop the SEC East.
