BATON ROUGE- The defending Southeastern Conference champion LSU Tiger softball team finished the 1999 season ranked fourth in the nation according tothe national RPI power rankings.
The fourth place ranking was a combination of the Tigers’ difficult schedule and the 56-10 record they posted for the season. LSU was the highest ranked non-Pac-10 softball program in the nation.
“We are excited to be the highest ranked non-Pac-10 school in the nation,” said head softball coach Glenn Moore.
“This proves that we are headed in the right direction both as a team an as a conference.”
The SEC ranked third among other major conferences in the nation. The Pac-10 softball conference leads the nation with the Big12 conference ranked second.
In all, three SEC softball programs were ranked in the top 25 by the RPI power rankings. In addition to LSU’s fourth place ranking, South Carolina was ranked 16th, and Tennessee 25th.
The LSU softball team begins practice this September in preparation for the 2000 season, losing only one senior from the 1999 team. The Tigers will host two fall tournaments in October.
