BATON ROUGE Two members of the defending Southeastern Conference champion LSU softball team received honors this past summer. Returning LSU softball pitcher Britni Sneed and incoming freshman Brienne Berry each received national recognition.
Sneed was second in the Female Athlete of the Month voting for June by the U. S. Olympic Committee. She was runner-up to soccer star Mia Hamm, who led the United States team to the World Cup.
Bursting on to the college softball scene in the 1999 Tigerseason, Sneed recorded an 23-5 overall record, a 1.13 ERA, earning first-team All-SEC Honors. Sneed played on the U.S. Junior Women’s National Softball Team this past summer. In leading the team to a silver medal in Taipei, Taiwan at the ISF Junior omen’s National Championship, she posted a 2-0 record and did not give up a run or hit during the tournament.
Outfielder Trena Peel also joined Sneed on the U.S. Olympic silver medal team.
Berry was named the Gatorade Circle of Champions Louisiana High School Softball Player of the Year for Louisiana after an outstandin senior season at Ouachita Christian High School in Monroe, La., where she played first base and also pitched.
While at Ouachita Christian, Berry was an All-State selection in softball for five consecutive years. She was also four-time District MVP. Berry was also named Fast Pitch World All-American for her 1998 Junior season.
