BATON ROUGE — Dana “Pokey” Chatman has been promoted to associate coach for the LSU women’s basketball team, head coach Sue Gunter announced on Monday.
Chatman, who is a former Kodak All-American for the Lady Tigers, has served as an assistant coach at LSU since the 1992-93 season.
“We are finally giving Pokey a title that covers the duties that she’s been doing for the last couple of years,” Gunter said. “This promotion allows her a little more involvement in the decision making in all areas of our program. It also recognizes her accomplishments during her coaching career. She’s done an outstanding job of signing some of the nation’s top high school players. ”
Chatman’s main responsibility with the Lady Tigers will continue to be that of recruiting coordinator. Since taking over as LSU’s recruiting coordinator three years ago, the Lady Tigers have had three signing classes rank among the best in the nation, including this year’s freshman class which has been rated as high as No. 3 nationally.
As a coach at LSU, Chatman has been a part of two NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 teams as well as a pair of appearances in the Women’s NIT. As a player for the Lady Tigers, Chatman started all but one game in her career, leading LSU to four NCAA Tournament appearances and to the Southeastern Conference Tournament title in 1991.
Chatman is also a member of the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
