Softball Advances to NCAA Regional Final

BATON ROUGE — Top-seed LSU kept alive its chances in the NCAA Softball Regional at Tiger Park with a 7-3 victory over second-seeded Oklahoma in an elimination game Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers, now 56-9, will come back at 7 p.m. and play the only undefeated team in the tournament, Southern Miss, for the right to go to the championship game on Sunday.

Britni Sneed went the distance in the circle for LSU, striking out nine, including the 200 batter of her freshman season. Oklahoma finishes its season at 40-16 with Jennifer Stewart (22-6) taking the loss.

Oklahoma broke through first with a run in the bottom of the third on a Mandy Fulton single which scored Stephanie Clark.

But LSU got its first runs in 10 innings in the fourth when Trena Peel singled home Tara Asbill and Ashlee Ducote and a Shaunte’ Fremin single scored Peel for a 3-1 advantage.

LSU put the game away in the sixth, getting four runs, three coming on Fremin’s second home run of the season over the left-center field scoreboard.
