Colosio Selected to NCAA Individual Championships

BATON ROUGE — LSU freshman Bruna Colosio became only the second freshman in school history to be selected to the 64-player NCAA Women’s Tennis Individual Championship, the NCAA announced Tuesday.

Additionally, Colosio and junior Ana Paula Mores were selected as the second alternates for the 32-team doubles draw. Both the singles and doubles tournaments will take place at the University of Florida from May 24-28.

“This is a great honor for Bruna and for this tennis program here at LSU,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “To be selected to the NCAA Individual Championship after only one semester in college is an amazing feat. I’m very proud of her accomplishments and I’m sure that she will be able to compete with the best in the tournament.” The draw for the individual championships will not be determined until May 22.

Colosio, a native of Cascaval, Brazil, joined the Lady Tigers in January and has competed in LSU’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles position with a 13-6 overall singles record including five wins over ranked opponents.

In singles play, Colosio is ranked No. 55 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and No. 39 in doubles, each is her highest ranking of the season.

She is one of only six freshmen to be selected to the 1999 Individual Championships.

Former Lady Tiger Suzana Rodrigues was the only other freshman to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championship, making her first of four career appearances in 1994 and reaching the quarterfinal round.

As a two-time All-American, Rodrigues is the most decorated LSU women’s tennis player.

As a team, LSU travels to Malibu, Calif., to face Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Team Championship on Saturday, May 15 at 4 p.m. CDT.

This season’s entry into the NCAA Team Championship marks LSU’s fourth-consecutive trip to the postseason under head coach Tony Minnis. LSU advanced to the finals of the 1998 NCAA Southwest Regional as well as the semifinals of the 1996 and 1997 Regionals.
