BATON ROUGE — LSU defensive end Marcus Spears has been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association defensive player of the week, the organization announced on Monday.
Tulane quarterback Lester Ricard earned the LSWA offensive player of the week award.
Spears was tabbed the defensive player of the week as he led the LSU defense in a 24-20 victory over Troy State on Saturday. The Baton Rouge native had arguable his most dominating game in a Tiger uniform with nine tackles (eight solos) including six tackles for loss in the game. Spears also had two sacks and his six tackles for loss were the most since Gabe Northern accomplished the feat in 1994 against Ole Miss. Spears led the LSU defense in holding Troy to 150 yards of total offense in the game.
Richard led the Green Wave to a 59-55 Conference USA victory over UAB on Saturday. Ricard threw for a Tulane record six touchdowns while completing 36-of-49 passes for 417 yards. He joins former Tulane quarterback Patrick Ramsey as the only Tulane quarterback to ever throw for over 400 yards in a game. Ricard connected with Chris Bush on a 12-yard strike with 27 seconds remaining for the winning score.
