BATON ROUGE — LSU catcher Matt Liuzza was named Thursday to the 2005 Baseball America Preseason All-America squad. Liuzza, a junior from Metairie, La., was voted to the third team.
Liuzza has started 114 games behind the plate the past two seasons, helping lead the Tigers to consecutive College World Series appearances. He batted .328 (75-for-229) in 2004 with 14 doubles, nine homers, 45 RBI and 37 runs.
Liuzza, a 6-0, 190-pound product of Rummel High School, committed just four errors in 370 chances last season, and he threw out 14 base runners attempting to steal.
The LSU catcher was named to the 2004 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional all-tournament team, as he hit .500 (5-for-10) in three games with one double, one RBI and four runs. For the entire NCAA Tournament
