BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s basketball team opens its 97th season of college basketball team hosting the top teams in the state in The LSU Louisiana Classic Friday and Sunday at the Pete Maravich Center.
The Tigers meet Tulane in the finale of a first-round doubleheader at approximately 8 p.m., following the 5:30 p.m. opener between Louisiana Lafayette and Louisiana Tech. The winners and losers will meet on Sunday with the consolation game at 12:30 p.m. and the championship at 3 p.m.
The LSU games will be available on the LSU Sports Network (Eagle 98.1 FM) and the other three schools will have their games available on their respective radio affiliates. The games Friday and Sunday will be televised regionally on Cox Sports Television (Cable Channel 37 in Baton Rouge).
Tickets for the sessions are available for $17 for middle level and $15 for upper level. There will be a special ticket offer for $5 for those who bring a donation of canned food for the Baton Rouge Food Bank. For Sunday’s doubleheader, those showing a ticket stub from Saturday’s LSU-Ole Miss football game will be admitted for $5.
The tournament will be the season openers for all four teams and the second time the Tigers have opened the season with an LSU hosted tournament in the last three years. The Tigers own the LSU-hosted Hispanic College Funds Classic to open the 2002-03 season, beating Nicholls State and South Alabama. This will be the ninth time since the 1975-76 season that LSU has opened the year in some kind of a tournament and the Tigers record in those tournaments in 11-6.
LSU and Tulane are meeting for the third straight year since the series was restarted after a near 20-year hiatus. This will be the 205th time the teams have met with LSU holding an overall lead of 121-83. LSU has won the last two years
