BATON ROUGE — LSU went back to work on Wednesday with a pair of split squad practices in shorts and shoulders pads.

The Tiger veterans again worked at during the afternoon heat with a 12:30 p.m. practice on Tuesday, while the rookies practiced under the lights at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. It marked the first time in camp that LSU has put the pads on for a practice.

“First day in shells and on a hot day like today,” LSU coach Nick Saban said following the first practice. “We like practicing the varsity guys during the day because we know that we need to prepare for playing a day game early.

“Even though (the Oregon State game) is not going to be played during the day time it’s certainly going to be at 5 o’clock, which is still not a cool time. I think the players need this. I know it’s difficult for them. I think it helps them to develop the kind of mental toughness they need to have to push themselves through on a day like today, which is challenging. Especially when you’re not used to the shells or the pads.”

The Tigers used Wednesday’s workout to continue work on the fundamentals of the game, while also continuing the process of installing the offensive and defensive systems.

“I’ve been pleased with what we’ve been able to get done these three days,” Saban said. “We’ve got a lot of good teaching in and we
