BATON ROUGE — The women’s soccer team held their first annual intersquad Saturday morning at the Tiger Soccer Complex. The purple squad won 1-0 on a goal by senior Artie Brown, who took advantage of a defensive mistake made by the gold squad. Senior Robyn DesOrmeaux had two saves for the purple squad, while Heather Zurburg had two saves for the gold squad.
“I was very impressed with both teams,” said co-head coach George Fotopoulos. “Some people really stepped up and played well today. I thought Julie Neumann, out of Baton Rouge, did well in the scrimmage. I also think our two forwards on the purple, Artie Brown and Stacy Bishop, did really well and their work rate was fantastic.”
The gold squad made a late attempt to tie the game, but the purple defense made key stops including an impressive save by DesOrmeaux.
“I think we are at a good point, being where we need to be this early in our season,” said Fotopoulos. “Even though we have our first game next Friday, I am very happy with the performances on both sides.”
The soccer team also held its first media soccer game before the intersquad game. The athletic department defeated the media 4-2 in a very intense game. Assistant soccer coach Eddie Lovell was the game MVP scoring two goals, including the winning goal.
