LSU Director of Golf Chuck Winstead announced the hiring of Andrew Danna on Monday (July 9). Danna will serve as the assistant coach for the men’s golf team and he brings a wealth of experience and postseason success along with him from his prior stop as a head coach at Lynn University in Florida.

“This is a dream come true for me,” Danna said. “I want to thank Chuck Winstead and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva for their belief in me.

“I’ve been at the Division II level for a while now, and those experiences have prepared me for this opportunity. I can’t wait to contribute and be a part of this special program. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what has been built at LSU and I’m glad to help continue the tradition of excellence here in Baton Rouge.”

Less than two months ago, Danna led Lynn to its first NCAA Division II National Championship in program history. The Fighting Knights set numerous records during the 2017-18 season that included a match-play win over the No. 1-ranked national seed, West Florida, to claim the NCAA title. Danna, a native of Baton Rouge, led the Fighting Knights to top-five finishes at 10 of their 12 tournaments to go along with a program record 54-hole total low of 826 (38-under par) at the FAU Spring Championship to claim the team title whilst competing against numerous Division I opponents. Danna was named the 2018 NCAA Division II Dave Williams National Coach of the Year after the record-setting campaign for the Fighting Knights.

“Our goal at LSU is to field teams that compete and succeed on the highest level year in and year out,” Winstead said. “Andrew has demonstrated his ability to do the same. He led Lynn University to its first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship earlier this spring and was named the Division II Coach of the Year for his work.

“As a Louisiana and Baton Rouge native, Andrew has a deep passion for our state and university. I am confident he will approach this job with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.”

Serving as the head coach for Lynn over the past six years, Danna has repeatedly put the Fighting Knights in position to win national titles. Since he took over the squad for the 2012-13 season, Danna has produced one national title, three runner-up campaigns to go along with a third and eighth-place showing, all at the NCAA Division II championships.

The two-time Sunshine State Coach of the Year led Lynn to back-to-back conference titles in 2015 and 2016. All in all, the Fighting Knights won 22 tournaments in the six-year span under the direction of Danna. During the 2016-17 season, Danna helped Felix Kvarnstrom earn the NCAA Division II Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award, which is given to the highest-ranked freshman in the country. Kvarnstrom ended the season as the top-ranked freshman in the nation and was also named the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year after registering seven top-10 finishes during his first year at Lynn.

Prior to his six-year stint at Lynn, Danna served as the head coach at Georgia Southwestern State University. In two seasons, he had three student-athletes selected as All-Americans as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Named the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year in his final year at Georgia Southwestern, he helped lead the team to three squad victories and had two players take home medalist honors as they rose to No. 1 in the NCAA Division II Golfstat rankings.

Danna earned his Masters of Business Administration in December of 2017 from Lynn University. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in August of 2006 from Mississippi State University. Danna will be joined in Baton Rouge by his wife, Carey.
