1994- Assistant Coach, LSU
Paula Lee enters her seventh season as an assistant coach for the Lady Tigers this season after joining the staff in 1995 as a restricted earnings coach.
Lee is in her third season as one of LSU’s chief recruiters and she played a vital role as the Lady Tigers landed the nation’s xxxx-best recruiting class last season. In 1998-99, Lee was instrumental in the signing of Ke-Ke Tardy, who was rated the 11th best senior in the nation.
In her seventh year with the Lady Tigers, Lee has a long history with LSU women’s basketball and Sue Gunter. Lee first came in contact with the LSU program and Gunter nearly 17 years ago. As a freshman at LSU in 1984, Lee tried to out for Lady Tiger team, and after just missing a spot on the roster, Gunter offered Lee a team manager position. Lee served in that capacity for four years from 1984-88. Over those four years, LSU won the Women’s NIT and participated in three NCAA Tournaments.
Lee graduated from LSU in 1988 and then went straight into coaching at Belaire High School. Lee initiated the girl’s basketball program at Belaire in 1990, and it took her only two seasons to get her team into the state playoffs. After a 2-19 record in her first year at Belaire, Lee’s teams improved each year with her best season coming in 1994 as Belaire posted a 20-9 mark and won the district title with a 9-1 record.
In her four years at Belaire, Lee’s teams posted a 48-54 overall mark, made the state playoffs three times and were district champions once. Lee was named District Coach of the Year in 1994 after guiding her team to the regional finals of the playoffs.
Besides coaching girl’s basketball, Lee also served as the softball coach from 1989-94. Lee was named 1993 District Coach of the Year in softball after leading her team to a second-place finish in district.
In addition to her recruiting responsibilities, Lee also coordinates team travel and film exchange as well as working with all phases of practice and game-related activities. Lee’s primary on-court assignment will be coaching LSU’s post players. Lee also oversees the team managers.
Lee earned her Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision in May of 1996. In addition to her coaching duties, Lee is an instructor in the LSU Kinesiology Department.
