Tasmin Mitchell, one of the most popular LSU Basketball players, who starred in the 2006 NCAA Final Four and on two SEC Championship teams at LSU, is entering his seventh season as a member of the LSU men’s basketball staff in 2023-24.

Mitchell took on his present role prior to the 2022-23 season as assistant to the head coach for Matt McMahon, assisting with program operations and team preparation.

Mitchell served two seasons (2017-19) as the director of student-athlete development at LSU before joining the on-floor coaching staff for three seasons (2019-22).

Prior to joining LSU, the native of Denham Springs, Louisiana, played professionally in the NBA G-League and overseas with stops in France, Russia and Israel since his LSU playing career ended in 2010. He returned to his hometown of Denham Springs in the fall of 2016 after the major flooding affected his family.

As assistant coach, he was involved in on-floor work during practice and involved in the recruiting efforts for the Tigers. In three seasons as an assistant coach, the Tigers won 62 games, went to two NCAA Tournaments, continued to bring in elite high school talent, and showed the ability to use the transfer portal to bring in the next group of star players at LSU.

Mitchell remains one of the most respected players in recent LSU history and his name can be found almost everywhere in the LSU basketball record book.

Mitchell still is No. 3 all-time at LSU in points at 1,989, a 14.5 points per game average for 137 career games. Mitchell ranks behind Pete Maravich and Durand “Rudy” Macklin on LSU’s career scoring chart.

He averaged 11.4 points in 2006 when as a freshman he was a member of LSU’s most recent Final Four team. He teamed with Baton Rouge products Tyrus Thomas, Glen Davis and Garrett Temple along with St. Martinsville’s Darrel Mitchell in a great storyline of players that had been on the court together since they were youngsters.

His 950 rebounds remain No. 6 all-time at LSU, as he ranks behind five top names of LSU basketball history – Macklin, Shaquille O’Neal, Al Sanders, Bob Pettit and Ned Clark. Of those six, Maravich, Macklin, O’Neal and Pettit have their jerseys hanging from the rafters of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

He is one of three players in LSU history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals in a career (with Clarence Ceasar and Jerry Reynolds). His 4,692 minutes played is a school record, as is his 137 games played and 136 starts. Of his 137 games played, he had 102 games scoring in double figures, also a school mark.

Along with the NCAA Final Four in 2006, he captured multiple Southeastern Conference titles as part of the 2009 championship team. He was honored in March of 2017 as the SEC Legend representing LSU at the league basketball tournament.

He was a McDonald’s All-American during his outstanding prep career at Denham Spring High School and is a member of the Denham Springs High School Hall of Fame. He was the school’s only four-time Class 5A All-State basketball player and was named Louisiana’s Mr. Basketball in 2005.

In October 2021, he was named a member of the 2022 induction class for the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Mitchell, born on June 25, 1986, and a 2010 graduate of LSU, for several years gave back to the youth of Denham Springs through the T-Mitch Free Basketball Camp which he organized and sponsored.
