Signed with the San Francisco Giants in July 2008 after pitching one season at LSU … pitched in the Tigers’ weekend rotation in 2008 and finished in the Top 10 in several SEC categories, including games started (No. 1 – 18), wins (No. 2 – 9), innings pitched (No. 4 – 96.0), strikeouts (No. 7 – 85), and opponent batting average (No. 8 -.264) … recovered from Tommy John surgery in 2005 to have a successful career at Skagit College (2006-07) and at LSU (2008).
JUNIOR SEASON (2008)
Appeared in 20 games with an SEC-best 18 starts, recording a 9-4 mark and a 4.12 ERA in 96 innings with 37 walks and 85 strikeouts … earned an NCAA Baton Rouge Regional win over Southern Miss (May 31), allowing four runs on six hits in five innings with two walks and four strikeouts … registered a season-best 10 strikeouts in 6.0 innings in SEC Tournament start vs. South Carolina (May 21) … recorded the first complete game of his LSU career April 13 in the Tigers’ 8-2 win at Ole Miss; Verdugo wasn’t scheduled to start the game; however, when right-hander Jared Bradford encountered problems with a blister on his hand during pregame warm-ups, Verdugo was called into action just minutes prior to first pitch — he responded with a tremendous outing, limiting the Rebels to two runs on three hits in nine innings with two walks and two strikeouts … superb outing at Kentucky (May 3), limiting the Wildcats to one unearned run on three hits in eight innings with three walks and seven strikeouts … defeated Arkansas on March 23, allowing one run on three hits in seven innings with four walks and five strikeouts … named on March 3 as the SEC Pitcher of the Week, earning two wins in his first two career LSU starts over Southern and Duquesne — he worked a total of 10 innings in the two outings, allowing just one run on three hits while recording a 0.90 ERA.
JUNIOR COLLEGE
One of most talented pitchers in junior college during his tenure at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Wash. … named Skagit Valley College Male Athlete of the Year in 2007 … earned 2007 first-team all-conference honors … selected by the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges to the first team for the Northern region and to the second-team for Washington state … recorded a 7-2 mark in 10 starts with a 2.74 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 2007; also pitched a no-hitter last season.
HIGH SCHOOL
A three-year letterwinner at Lake Stevens High School in Washington state … winner of the Sportsmanship Award and Mr. Baseball Award in Washington … recorded a 3-3 pitching record in 2005 with a 2.70 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 43 innings of play … also batted .354 with five homers and 23 RBI.
