MLB Draft: 17th round in 2008 (Minnesota)

Outstanding southpaw who pitched in the Tigers’ 2008 weekend rotation after receiving a medical redshirt in 2007 (hip surgery) … signed with the Minnesota Twins organization after the club selected him in the 17th round of the 2008 draft … pitched at Birmingham-Southern in 2005 and 2006 before transferring to LSU … pitched in the summer of 2007 in the Northwoods League, recording a 2.72 ERA in 39.2 innings while posting 38 strikeouts … named the No. 9 prospect in the Northwoods League by Baseball America magazine – the magazine cited his plus-90s fastball and his loose arm action.

SENIOR SEASON (2008)
Appeared in 20 games (18 starts), posting a 5-3 record and a 5.08 ERA in 88.2 innings . . . recorded 37 walks and 81 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .252 batting average … tied with teammate Ryan Verdugo for first place in the SEC with 18 games started … .also finished No. 6 in the league in opponent batting average (.252) … solid outing as starter in Game 3 of Super Regional vs. UC Irvine — 4.2 IP,  five hits, two earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts … named to SEC All-Tournament team after defeating Vanderbilt (May 22) — 7.0 IP, one earned run on four hits, three walks, one strikeout … defeated Miss. State on May 10 — 7.0 IP, two hits, two runs, two walks, 8 K … excellent outing to defeat South Carolina on April 25 — 8.1 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 5 BB, 7 K … made two starts in the Alabama series (April 4 and April 6) — pitched three shutout innings in Game 1(two hits, no walks, three Ks) before rain suspended the contest; came back to start Game 3 and allowed three runs on four hits with no walks and five Ks. Martin threw a total of 100 pitches in the two outings, helping LSU to wins in both games.

JUNIOR SEASON (2007)
Received a medical redshirt after hip surgery.

SOPHOMORE SEASON (2006 at Birmingham-Southern)
Played a prominent starting role with nine starts and 11 appearances … went 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA in 53 innings of work … struck out 57 and held opponents to a .218 batting average.  

FRESHMAN SEASON (2005 at Birmingham-Southern)
Had a solid freshman campaign, making 17 appearances and three starts … went 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA and had 36 strikeouts to 10 walks in 36 innings … held right-handed hitters to a .204 batting average … fanned 10 batters in six innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk in his first collegiate start against Tennessee-Martin on March 15 … did not allow a run in nine of 17 appearances … named the third-best pro prospect in the Northwoods League and reached the league’s all-star game … posted a 5-5 record with a 2.39 ERA in 28 games. 

HIGH SCHOOL
A four-year starter and letterwinner at Boaz High School … named team and all-county MVP and was an all-state selection … posted an 8-3 record with a 0.46 ERA in 76 innings pitched as a senior … struck out 160 batters while walking only 16 … for his career, finished with 352 strikeouts, which is ninth all-time in Alabama high school history … selected to the East-West All-Star game … coached by Nickey Dixon … also lettered four years on the basketball team as a forward.
