In his playing career, Thompson was a two-time All-American striker at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he played from 2005- 2006. He graduated in 2007 with his bachelor of arts degree in business and corporate communications and began his professional soccer career.

He trained for the USL combine after his collegiate career and signed with Lancaster Rattlers in 2007, where he played professionally for one year.

The Rattlers entered the USL Premier Development League in 2007 as the first ever soccer franchise from the Southern California area. The franchise is now known as FC Santa Clarita.

Thompson then joined the Southern California Seahorses, a professional club based in La Mirada, California, for two years in 2008.

The Arizona native began his professional coaching career in 2009 in his home state with the Sereno Soccer Club. As the head coach, Thompson oversaw 12 teams and trained players like Ilijah Paul, who was the No. 7 pick in the Major League Soccer (MLS) draft.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities with Sereno, Thompson also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Scottsdale Community College from 2013-2017 and specialized in goalkeeper training.

Thompson got his USSF National A License in 2015 and coached for various other programs such as the development academy MSL, next program for boys and in the Elite Club National League (ECNL) and Development Player League (DPL).

Thompson continued to work for the Sereno Soccer Club as it transitioned to Real Salt Lake/Utah Royals from 2017-2021 prior to joining the Tigers in 2022.

His primary responsibilities as an assistant coach include technical training with the team and to work with the strikers during functional sessions. He also will support players with individual player development and provide training sessions for players looking for additional training.
