Tim Kaine continues his long association with Head Coach Matt McMahon as he continues as LSU Chief of Staff for men’s basketball for the 2023-24 season. He is in his second season at LSU.

Kaine also now has added Assistant Coach to his LSU title as he will be an on-court coach this season under a new NCAA rule that allows programs to have two more on-court coaches beginning this seaosn.

Kaine has been with Coach McMahon for several years, having served seven years on the staff at Murray State, prior to his arrival at LSU.

Kaine is primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of the LSU men’s basketball program, including travel arrangements for the Tiger program.

Kaine brought a wide variety of experience to LSU, having served on coaching staffs for almost 20 years. He was part of one of the greatest periods in Murray State program history that includes four Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championships in the five seasons (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21) and three OVC Tournament titles (2017-18, 2018-19, 2021-22).

The Racers won 121 games in five seasons, including 31 in 2021-22, the 11th time in school history that MSU posted 25 wins or more in a season. Including an 18-0 record in 2021-22, Murray State was 75-17 in the OVC during this span.

The Racers made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2018, 2019 and 2022, advancing to the round of 32 in both 2019 and 2022.

He helped coach 2022 OVC Player of the Year KJ Williams, who later earned All-SEC honors at LSU in 2022-23, and first-team all-conference selections Tevin Brown and Justice Hill. He was also part of the staff when Murray State featured OVC consensus all-America selection Ja Morant, OVC Player of the Year Jonathan Stark, and league Defensive Player of the Year Shaq Buchanan.

Kaine served as assistant coach for the 2014-15 season at Georgia Southern when the Eagles had a 22-9 record. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach from 2008-14 at Florida Atlantic. In 2011, the Owls were Sun Belt Conference champions and made an appearance in the NIT. Kaine was voted as one of the Sun Belt’s best recruiters by recruitdirt.com.

Kaine was the Director of Operations at Winthrop University (2007-08), where the team won the Big South tournament and made an NCAA Tournament appearance. He also was an assistant coach at Newberry College (2004-07) and Guilford College (2003-04). There, he recruited Ben Strong, the 2007 Division III National Player of the Year.

His first coaching assignment was as a graduate assistant at Austin Peavy (2002-03) where the Governors made the NCAA Tournament after a 23-8 season and a first-place OVC finish.

Kaine graduated from Winthrop in 2002 with a degree in sports management and then earned a master’s degree in sport management from Austin Peay in 2003.

Kaine played soccer at Winthrop four years after transferring from Tennessee-Martin where he played basketball for one season.

Kaine is married to Jenny (Ashworth) Kaine and the couple has two children, Tory and Avery. He is also the godson of retired Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Kaine, like LSU’s head coach, is a native of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
