BATON ROUGE – LSU golf signee Raegan Denton posted an even par round of 72 Thursday to finish the 36-hole qualifying at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in a tie for sixth at 5-under par 139.
Denton joins Ingrid Lindblad and Latanna Stone as Tigers that have advanced from the qualifying to the final round of the event, which is scheduled for Saturday at the famed home of The Masters, the Augusta National Golf Club.
Denton, from Adelaide, Australia, is in a large group at 5-under after rounds of 67-72. That group is six shots off the lead of Asterisk Talley at 11-under par 133 (66-67) with a pair of 10-under 134 scores in second place – Meja Ortengren (67-67) and Maria Jose Marin (65-69).
Andrea Revuelta of Spain and Avery Weed of the U.S. are tied for fourth at 6-under 138.
A total of 32 golfers made the top 30 and ties cut and for the second straight year the number was under par at 1-under 143 over the par 72, 6,450-yard Champion’s Retreat venue in the Augusta suburb of Evans, Georgia.
Denton started on the second nine in her second round and posted eight pars and a lone bogey on the par 4 13th hole.
On the first nine, her last nine holes of the 36-hole qualifying, the 18-year-old birdied the par four first hole and the par 5 third hole to get to 1-under for the round and 6-under for the tournament. Bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes dropped her back to 4-under, but a stellar third shot on the final hole, the par 5 ninth, put her with a two-foot birdie putt to get her back at even for the round and 5-under for the event.
Denton had eight birdies over the two days, five in the opening round Wednesday. Denton is T11 in the field of 72 and she was 4-of-8 on par 5 birdies. Denton is T2 in the field hitting 30-of-36 greens in regulation.
LSU sophomore Rocio Tejedo posted a second straight 4-over 76 to finish at 8-over par 152 to conclude her official play in her third appearance in the ANWA.
Friday the entire field will play a practice round at Augusta National before a final gathering reception at the club. The final round is set for Saturday morning with live coverage on NBC Sports beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
