BATON ROUGE – The LSU Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes (CCACSA) recognizes six student-athletes for their scholastic and community achievements each month. Student-athletes are chosen based on their commitment to academic success and for their devotion to volunteerism and service to the community.
Here are the July 2021 CCACSA’s staff Student-Athletes of the Month:
Garrett Barber: Jr., Men’s Golf, Stuart, Fla. (Major: General Business)
Nominator – Taylor Dennehy, Assistant Director: “Garrett has done a great job balancing his academic and athletic commitments this Summer. I’m so impressed with his drive to continue working on his classes while traveling and competing in tournaments.”
Chase Brock: Fr., Gymnastics, Atlanta, Ga. (Major: Interdisciplinary Studies)
Nominator – Dr. Louise Bodack, Director of Student Affairs: “Chase’s work ethic in CHEM 1201 during five week summer session B was admirable. Despite having to miss several classes, she did not let that slow her down and Chase stayed on top of her work and submitted all assignments on time. She asked for help when needed and always came to tutoring prepared, focused, and with questions. Such preparation led to a growth in her academic self-confidence. Despite how her day was going, she always arrived to tutoring with a smile on her face and left with one as well.”
Ali Gaye: Sr., Football, Lynwood, Wash. (Major: Interdisciplinary Studies)
Nominator – Rachel Herrington, Tutorial Coordinator: “Ali is a hard worker both on and off the field. He’s focused, driven, and committed to doing all he can to stay on top of his academics. I am very proud of all he has accomplished during his first full year at LSU and look forward to his future success!”
Phillip Webb: Fr., Football, Buford, Ga. (Major: Agricultural Business)
Nominator – Molly Ann Walke, Learning Specialist: “Phillip stays organized and plans his time wisely in order to meet all of the demands that come with being a student-athlete. He stays on top of his work, excels at communication, and remains engaged in tutoring sessions. He has such a friendly personality, and his positivity is contagious!”
Josh White: So., Football, Houston, Texas (Major: Marketing)
Nominator: Christine Paschal, Learning Specialist: “Josh always gives 100% and has excelled during his time at LSU. Josh always comes to his appointments with a fantastic attitude and ready to work. He was successful this summer with a faster-paced 5 week course in a subject where he typically struggles and came out with a B! I am super proud of what he has accomplished so far and can’t wait to see what he does in the future!”
Milan Young: Graduate Student, Women’s Track and Field, Houston Texas (Major: Leadership and Human Resource Development Graduate Program)
Nominator – Jerrica Steward, Assistant Director: “Milan graduated in May of 2021 with a degree in Mass Communications and started the Leadership and Human Resource Development graduate program this Summer. She excelled academically. She started her first two graduate level courses while training for and competing in the 400 Hurdles at the Olympic trials. She advanced to the quarter finals.”
Accountability – Commitment – Success – Integrity – Diversity – Teamwork – Service – Education
It is through living the values of the Total Team Commitment 2017-2022, particularly education, academic success, and service to the community that six student-athletes are recognized as Cox Communications Academic Center Student-Athlete of the month. These values are fundamental to the growth and development of our student-athletes as they enter to learn, then leave to serve.
The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a 54,000 square-foot facility composed of teams for academic affairs, student affairs and information technology, who annually serve more than 500 student-athletes. The purpose of the CCACSA is to provide an all-inclusive, student-centered support structure for all student-athletes from matriculation, through graduation, and life beyond.
