BATON ROUGE – LSU women’s golf coach Garrett Runion is one of 20 candidates for the 2021 Women’s Golf Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year honor.

The Jackie Steinmann WGCA National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride is announced after medal play concludes at the upcoming NCAA Championships which LSU will take part in beginning on Friday in Scottsdale, Arizona. 

Recognized as the highest annual coaching honor in women’s collegiate golf, the Jackie Steinmann WGCA National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride is awarded annually to the top coach in Division I. The recipient is selected by a prestigious collection of women’s collegiate golf coaches who follow criteria that has been established to identify the top head coach for the past year. 

The LSU women’s golf team is ranked No. 3 in the Golfstat rankings and are coming off a T3 finish in the Southeastern Conference championships where they lost in the semifinals of the match play portion of the tournament. LSU in the medal play 54 holes set an NCAA record with a 46-under par score of 818. 

LSU, in Runion’s third year as women’s head coach, is on pace to record the lowest team scoring average in program history, currently sitting at 287.67.

The Women’s Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women’s collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the WGCA represents over 650 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
