Tiger Softball Road Trip Continues Tuesday At McNeese

BATON ROUGE – The 15th-ranked LSU softball team continues its April road swing when it travels to Lake Charles Tuesday night for a non-conference game against McNeese State.

The game, at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond, is scheduled for a first pitch just after 6:30 p.m. Cox Sports Television will have the telecast of the game while Patrick Wright will have the game on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (Guaranty Broadcasting’s 107.3 FM in Baton Rouge).

The Tigers, 24-13, will be looking to continue their strong play in the doubleheader sweep on Sunday of No. 19 Missouri, 4-2 and 12-5, in Columbia. LSU found itself down a run in the opener after an inning but got one in the second and three in the third to put itself in position to even the series.

In the final game, the Tigers exploded for 10 runs over the last four innings, recording 18 hits including back-to-back home runs by Taylor Tidwell and Taylor Pleasants in the seventh inning. The Tigers had fallen behind Missouri, 5-1 in the first inning.

Ali Kilponen picked up the win in both games of the doubleheader, going the distance in game one, striking out eight, and coming in after just a third of an inning in game two to pitch 6.2 innings with seven more strikeouts. Kilponen allowed just seven hits in 13.2 innings to pick up her tenth win in 14 decisions.

Aliyah Andrews also had a big day at Missouri Sunday going 3-of-4 in the first game and 4-of-5 in the second contest.

The Cowgirls are 19-21 on the season, but 9-6 in the Southland Conference after winning the final game of the series in Hammond Saturday against Southeastern, 3-1. Cowgirl starter Ashley Vallejo helped McNeese by getting Southeastern retired in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning when the Lions had runners in scoring position.

The teams met in the opening game of the season in the Tiger Classic (Feb. 11) when LSU defeated McNeese, 8-0, in six innings.

LSU started strong early in that game when Pleasants and Amanda Doyle had back-to-back home runs. Georgia Clark added a single to right center which was followed by two walks and a hit batter to push her across the plate for a 3-0 first-inning lead.

Ciara Briggs had a three-run home run to aid the scoring that first meeting

Shelbi Sunseri took control of the game in the circle with six strikeouts. She also had a big night at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple and a homerun.

The Tigers are on the road for the rest of the month of April and will travel to Raleigh for a three-game non-conference set with North Carolina State on Friday and Saturday. Those games will be streamed on the ACCNX video service. All three games will also be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network.
