Thomas/Graca Defeat No. 3 Duo; Tigers Fall, 4-1
KNOXVILLE, TN.—The LSU men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 5 Tennessee, 4-1, Friday afternoon at the Barksdale Stadium.
The Tigers fall to 11-10 on the season and 3-7 in SEC play.
The Tigers started the day off strong in doubles, grabbing two wins over ranked duos. No. 55 Ronald Hohmann was out of the lineup, so both the doubles and singles lineups saw a bit of tweaking. The Senior/Freshman duo of Rafael Wagner and Ben Koch picked up a win over No. 54 Johannus Monday and Martin Prada, 6-3. LSU’s usual court two duo moved up to court one to take on No. 3 Pat Harper and Adam Walton. The Harper/Walton duo was 18-6 leading up to this match, but Joao Graca and Joey Thomas handed them their seventh loss of the season, defeating the No. 3 duo, 6-4, and clinching the doubles point for the Tigers.
It was all Tennessee following doubles. The Vols won the race to four without dropping a set in singles. Benjamin Ambrosio was the first to fall after UT’s Luca Wiedenmann won, 6-1, 6-0. UT’s Andrew Rogers put the Vols up one after defeating Tomas Descarrega on court six, 6-4, 6-1. No. 93 Giles Hussey took down freshman Ben Koch, 6-3, 6-1. Tennessee clinched the match after No. 12 Johannus Monday defeated Joao Graca, 6-3, 6-3.
The Tigers return home to the LSU Tennis Complex on Sunday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m. Sunday’s match will also be Senior Day, where we will honor our three seniors: Joey Thomas, Rafael Wagner, and Malik Bhatnagar.
