No. 3 Tigers Sweep Day One of LSU Beach Invitational

BATON ROUGE – The No. 3 LSU Beach Volleyball team swept all three of its matches Saturday at the LSU Beach Invitational, taking down New Orleans, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 16 South Carolina.

“Today was a good day,” said head coach Russell Brock. “We love to play and to get a chance to play three matches in one day is challenging, but this is the part of the season when we are really just trying to find ways to get better.”

The Tigers will play two more on Sunday, beginning with Houston Baptist at 11 a.m. and closing the day against Southern Miss at 3:30 p.m. Those matches will air on Cox Sports Teleivision

The Tigers began the tournament against New Orleans and had a court won before the match began. With not enough players to field an entire five courts, the Privateers forfeited Court 5. On Court 4, Jess Lansman and Sydney Moore took care of business in straight sets, 21-12 and 21-14.

Claire Coppola and Kelli Greene-Agnew clinched the match for the Tigers with a straight-set win on Court 2, 21-13 and 21-9. On Court 1, the reigning National Pair of the Week of Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss stayed perfect, winning 21-8 and 21-15. Ashlyn Rasnick-Pope and Toni Rodriguez finished off the sweep with a 21-15 and 21-12 win on Court 3.

A couple of hours later the Tigers took the court against the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Olivia Ordonez and Kahlee York earned LSU’s first court on Court 5 in straight sets, 21-15 and 21-17. Moments later, Lansman and Moore put LSU up 2-0 with a win on Court 4, 21-11 and 21-14.

Kloth and Nuss clinched the match for the Tigers on Court 1 with a straight-set, 21-9 and 21-15, win. Coppola and Greene-Agnew won their first set on Court 2, 21-15. They trailed 19-16 in the second set, but rattled off three straight points to tie it up, ultimately completing the comeback, 25-23. Rasnick-Pope and Rodriguez finished the sweep over TAMUCC on Court 3 in straight-sets, 21-16 and 21-18.

The Tigers finished the night defeating No. 16 South Carolina, 4-1, in a battle of the only two SEC schools with beach volleyball programs. Lansman and Moore fought to keep the Tigers alive on Court 4. After falling in the first set 20-22, the pair clinched the win in the last two sets, 21-22 and 15-8. Ordonez and York put LSU up 2-0 in straight sets on Court 5, 21-13 and 21-18.

Greene-Agnew and Coppola fought hard on Court 2, but the pair fell to the Gamecocks in two sets, 21-17 and 21-14. On Court 1, Kloth and Nuss put the Tigers up 3-1 after dominating in straight sets, 21-16 and 21-7. Rasnick-Pope and Rodriguez finished the night off with a sweep on Court 3, 21-17 and 21-19.

“Our biggest match of the day was obviously at the end, so we had to be as good as we could possibly be and we finished great,” said Brock.
