Mason Sets School Record, Tigers Qualify Seven for Thursday Finals

COLUMBIA, MO. – The LSU men’s swimming team competed in Thursday prelims at the 2021 SEC Championships in Columbia, Missouri. Seven Tigers qualified for final swims and will be back in action tonight from the Mizzou Aquatic Center starting at 6 p.m. CT.

IN THE POOL

In the 400-Yard IM, Emil Hassling and David Boylan started the morning off right qualifying for the ‘C’ Final. Hassling swam a career best time of 3:51.52 finishing 19th.  He now holds LSU’s sixth fastest time in the event. Boylan touched the wall with a time of 3:52.33 to finish in 23rd place. Isak Vikstrom finished in 28th place with a time of 3:56.36. 

In the 100-Yard Butterfly, Michael Petro punched his ticket for the ‘C’ Final, finishing 24th with a time of 47.58. Julian Norman touched the wall with a personal best time of 49.99, coming in 43rd.

Brooks Curry led the Tigers in the 200-Yard Freestyle, finishing second overall, qualifying for the ‘A’ Final, with a time of 1:33.21. Brian McGroarty finished 41st with a time of 1:39.12. Mason Nyboer touched the wall with a time of 1:41.39, finishing 46th overall. 

In the 100-Yard Breaststroke, freshman Mitch Mason dove in and broke LSU’s school record, swimming a 52.61. Mason finished in a tie for sixth overall, qualifying for the ‘A’ Final. Luca Pfyffer touched the wall with a time of 53.62, punching his ticket for the ‘C’ Final. Emil Hassling and Jack Jannasch finished 28th and 30th overall with times of 54.44 and 54.66, both achieving personal best times. 

For the 100-Yard Backstroke, freshman Michael Foley qualified for the ‘C’ Final with a career best time of 48.04, touching the wall 24th overall. Miguel Velasquez finished 48th with a time of 48.49.

“We had a couple of really big swims this morning,” said LSU head swim coach Dave Geyer. “Brooks took care of business where he needed to and Mitch put together an amazing race for another ‘A’ Final and school record. On top of that, we just took advantage of some opportunities to add second swims tonight.”
