Men's Tennis Takes Down ULL, 4-3

Baton Rouge—The LSU men’s tennis team defeated in-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-3, Wednesday night at the LSU Tennis Complex.

The Tigers have started 3-0 every year since the beginning of the Brandi Era, dating back to 2017.

LSU started off the night by clinching the doubles point after Tiger duos Ronald Hohmann and Rafael Wagner and Nick Watson and Boris Kozlov handled their respective Ragin’ Cajun duos. Nick Watson and Boris Kozlov defeated Sanchez Gonzalez and Fillat Gimenez of ULL, 6-2. Shortly after, the No. 60 ranked duo of Ronald Hohmann and Rafael Wagner took care of Keremedchiev and Dworak on court one, 6-3. Joey Thomas and Joao Graca, who made his collegiate dual debut, fell behind early in their doubles match. Down 5-3, they mounted a comeback and pushed the match to a tiebreak. They went on to dominate the tiebreak, winning 7-6(3).

Singles featured some highs for the Tigers, but also introduced some new lows. LSU quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Joey Thomas handled Xandy Hammitt of ULL on court six, 6-1, 6-0. After Joao Graca received his first dual doubles win, he followed that up with his first dual singles win, defeating Alejo Ferrer Chueca, 6-4, 6-1. Boris Kozlov gave LSU the victory after defeating Fillat Gimenez, 6-3, 6-3. Though the Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season, there was still work to be done on courts one, two, and three. LSU won the first set on each court, but all three fell in the second, pushing each match to a best-of-ten tiebreak. Wagner found himself deadlocked at 12 with ULL’s Karlo Kajin, but Kajin won two straight points, giving LSU their first match defeat on the season, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(12). Ronald Hohmann took a 9-6 lead in the tiebreak, but Kermedchiev caught fire and strung off five straight point and took the match, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(9). Malik Bhatnagar was tied with Sanchez Gonzales 6-6 in the tiebreak, but Bhatnagar dropped four straight points and was defeated, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(6), and finishing the match with an LSU victory, 4-3.
