Celaya-Hernandez, Gutierrez Lavenant Earn SEC Weekly Honors

BATON ROUGE – LSU diver Juan Celaya-Hernandez has been named SEC Male Diver of the Week, and Montserrat Gutierrez Lavenant has been named SEC Female Freshman of the Week  announced by the conference office on Tuesday. This is the 12th time Celaya-Hernandez has been awarded SEC Diver of the Week in his career, and third time this season. For Gutierrez Lavenant, this is the first SEC Weekly Award in her young career.

Celaya-Hernandez notched two victories this past week at the Auburn Diving Invitational. He posted a final score of 398.90 to win one-meter. He then posted a season high score of 473.85 to win three-meter.

“This is yet another deserving recognition for Juan,” said LSU head diving coach Doug Shaffer. “Although our competitive opportunities have been limited during this pandemic, his training has been excellent in his relentless pursuit of his goals.”

Gutierrez Lavenant notched two top-three finishes at the Auburn Diving Invitational. She finished in second place on three-meter with a score of 326.85. On one-meter, she finished in third place with a score of 288.10. To finish the event, she finished in sixth place with a score of 221.45 in her first collegiate outing on platform.

“Montserrat has made tremendous progress on springboard since arriving at LSU,” said Coach Shaffer. “Freshman year is a big adjustment without experiencing it during a pandemic. I am proud of her accomplishment and I am very optimistic for the bright future she has ahead of her.

The Tiger divers will be back in action January 3-5 as they will head to Athens, Georgia for the Georgia Diving Invitational.
