Cross Country Travels to Compete in Arturo Barrios Invitational
Baton Rouge, La. – The men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Bryan-College Station, Texas to compete in the Arturo Barrios Invite which will take place at the Watts XC Course on Saturday morning. The men’s team will get the day started in the 8k event which will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT. The women’s squad will follow with the 6k event starting at 10:15 a.m. CT.
The Tigers will face off against some familiar foes as Texas A&M and Arkansas will be in attendance. LSU has already competed against Texas A&M and Arkansas this season, meeting at the SEC Preview Meet in the team’s season debut. LSU will also be going against some of the top squads in the Big 12 as they will be competing against Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, and TCU.
The women’s cross country team is coming off of a victory in the 5k Open event with a team score of 27 points at the Florida State Invitational earlier this month. Katy-Ann McDonald led the way for the Tigers as she was the squad’s top finisher in the race. McDonald ran a time of 17:36.4 in the race to place second overall in her 2020 cross country season debut. The London, England native has been the top finisher for the women’s team in six consecutive meets she has competed in dating back to last season. Following right behind McDonald was Julia Palin who ran a time of 17:41.1 to earn the bronze medal. Alicia Stamey was the third Tiger to finish placing fifth and running a time of 17:55.8 to contribute towards the team’s scoring performance. Shelby Spoor continued to make an impact as a true freshman as she ran a time of 18:18.0 to place eighth overall. The last scorer for LSU was Adele Broussard who ran a time of 18:19.0 and crossed the finish line in ninth place. Spoor and Broussard showcased a very impressive spread as they finished within one hundredth of a second of another.
Like the season debut race, the top three finishers for LSU in the 8k Invite at the Florida State Invitational were Davis Bove, Eric Coston, and Jackson Martingayle. Bove registered another top ten finish as he placed sixth with a time of 24:32.5. Bove continues to increase his impressive scoring streak as he has scored for the Tigers in all seven meets he has ran in. Eric Coston was the second Tiger to finish in the 8k event, placing 12th with a time of 24:47.50 to contribute to the team’s fifth place finish. Sophomore, Jackson Martingayle placed 26th with a time of 25:10 which makes it the second time he has scored in consecutive meets in his young collegiate cross country career. Rounding out the scorers for the men’s team were Will Dart and Cade Martin who placed 39th (25:267) and 56th (25:23.3) respectively.
The Arturo Barrios Invite will be the final regular season meet that the Tigers will compete in before they host the SEC Cross Country Championships in Baton Rouge, La. on Friday, October 30. For the full LSU cross country schedule check out lsusports.net.
