Winstead Charges on to Semifinals at North & South Championship
Pinehurst, N.C. – Trey Winstead won two matches on Friday at the 120th Men’s North & South Championship on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the tournament hosted at Pinehurst.
Winstead finished tied for ninth after two days of stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday, and that earned him the No. 13 seed in the 32 player match-play bracket that began Thursday. He got off to a bit of a slow start in the Round of 32 match against the No. 20-seeded Connor Schmidt trailing by two at the turn. He proceeded to win five of the next six holes and ended up knocking Schmidt out by a tally of 3&2 to advance to the Round of 16.
Friday morning’s Round of 16 match against 29th-seeded Gordon Sargent saw Winstead lead wire-to-wire and capture another 3&2 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Winstead went up against fifth-seeded and No. 33 overall in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Cooper Dossey in the quarters. Dossey took a 1 UP lead over Winstead on the fourth hole, but that would be the last hole Winstead would lose. Winstead and Dossey matched each other on the ensuing seven holes before Winstead won holes Nos. 12, 13, and 14 to go 2 UP. Winstead closed out the match by splitting the next three holes and winning 2&1.
It’s been a lot of golf for Winstead the past four days, 90 holes to be exact. Saturday’s semifinal round for Winstead will begin at 6 a.m. CT on Pinehurst Course No. 2, the location of all the match play matches. Winstead will take on William Holcomb V in his semifinal match Saturday morning. If Winstead wins, the championship match will begin around 12 p.m. CT on Saturday immediately following the semis.
