Mays Named LABC Major College Maravich Award Winner
BATON ROUGE – LSU senior Skylar Mays picked up his second Louisiana Player of the Year honor when he was named the winner of the Pete Maravich Memorial Award from the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches.
The award is given to the top player in major college basketball in the state of Louisiana.
Earlier this year, Mays was named the state POY by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The LABC announced its awards by social media in lieu of its annual banquet that is normally held in May each year.
Mays, a first-team All-SEC selection, led the Tigers to a tie for second in the Southeastern Conference in 2020, averaging a team best 16.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals with a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Mays is the only player in the SEC since 1992-93 to average in a season 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and shoot 40 percent from three-point range in conference play.
Mays joins a distinguished list of winners of the Maravich Award joining Rudy Macklin (1981), Don Redden (1986), Nikita Wilson (1987), Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (1989, 1990), Shaquille O’Neal (1991, 1992), Stromile Swift (2000), Ronald Dupree (2003), Brandon Bass (2005), Glen Davis (2006, 2007), Marcus Thornton (2009), Tas Mitchell (2010), Jarell Martin (2015), Ben Simmons (2016) and Tremont Waters (2019).
